This is a summer school activity of the SFB/TR 45 financed by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It will take place April 1-4, 2008 at the University of Mainz. The workshop is intended to improve the training of PhD students and postdocs in the area, in particular of those inside the SFB/TR 45.

Speakers

  • Samuel Boissière (Université de Nice)
Introduction to toric geometry
  • Gerard van der Geer (Universiteit van Amsterdam)
Compactifications of moduli spaces
  • Samuel Grushevsky (Princeton University)
Moduli spaces of Abelian varieties

Program

Samuel Grushevsky and Gerard van der Geer will give five lectures each on the geometry of moduli spaces of Abelian varieties and compactifications. Samuel Boissière will teach us the necessary background in toric geometry.

    Prerequisites

We will assume the participants have some knowledge of algebraic geometry as well as some familiarity with basic properties of complex tori (first 4 chapters in Birkenhake/Lange, Complex Abelian Varieties, Springer 2004). No prior knowledge in toric geometry is required.

The summer school starts on April 1 at 9 a.m. and ends on April 4 at 5 p.m. There will be lecture series in the morning and in the afternoon. On Thursday and Friday, extra time is scheduled for exercises and discussion. A detailed schedule can be found here.

Please indicate in the application form if you would like us to reserve a hotel room for you.

During the summer school, lunch can be taken at the Zentralmensa (student cafeteria), which is close to the institute.

Travel Information

All lectures will take place at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Mainz, Staudingerweg 9, room 05-514.
Here is a map of the campus.
