This is a summer school activity of the SFB/TR 45 financed by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It will take place September 17-21, 2007 at the University of Mainz. The workshop is intended to improve the training of PhD students and postdocs in the area, in particular of those inside the SFB/TR 45.

Speakers

Stefan Gille, Nikita Semenov, Kirill Zainoulline, Markus Rost.

Abstract

Recent developments in the theory of quadratic forms, Milnor K-Theory and Galois cohomology rises several natural questions concerning the structure of the category of Chow motives. The main question is how to describe its set of generators and relations. Namely, given a variety X to find all possible motivic decompositions of X. In the present workshop we will focus on this question for motives of varieties which admit an action of an algebraic group G. We also discuss relations with torsion indices, canonical dimensions and cohomological invariants.

Here is a more detailed outline of the workshop.

Prerequisites

Basic Algebraic Geometry (e.g. level of the book by Hartshorne)

Content of Lectures

There a series of lectures in the morning, examples, discussions and exercise sessions in the afternoon. On Wednesday there will be a free afternoon.

Programme

Lectures are in room 05-426, Staudingerweg 9, 55099 Mainz, here is a Timetable for Lectures.

Financial Support and Applications

Full financial support is available for members of the SFB/TR 45. We will provide financial assistance for other participants, too. Applications for this workshop can be sent to Jutta Gonska (gonska@mathematik.uni-mainz.de).
