Abstract. Inter-universal Teichmuller theory, as developed by Mochizuki, could be regarded as a version of arithmetic deformation of number fields, that is based on the use of arithmetic fundamental groups and non-archimedean theta functions. In these two talks, we will discuss some of the underlying ideas.
